RESTORATION of a historic theatre that will remember a Beatles legend, began yesterday.
The Neptune Theatre in Liverpool, is to honour Brian Epstein, the former manager of the Beatles.
Merseyside-based Nobles Construction began on site yesterday in restoring the Hanover Street venue.
The work of the 97-year-old site will be completed in February next year, allowing time for the City Council to hand the theatre over to a full-time operator.
Before now, the Grade II listed building had been closed to the public for the past five years.
The restoration came after Liverpool City Council settled a leasing dispute with the landlord.
Behind the project, Council leader Joe Anderson has made the £750,000 theatre revamp a priority since being elected in May.
“Brian Epstein was, to many, the 5th Beatle,” said Councillor Anderson. “He was also a brilliant entrepreneur who put many Liverpool acts on the road to success.”
“I’m delighted Brian’s family have accepted our request to rename this venue the Epstein Theatre.”
“It gives Liverpool its first real opportunity to officially say thank you to one of our greatest sons for his unique contribution.”
The restoration will see the 400-seat Edwardian venue fitted with crystal chandeliers and modernisation features, with improved access for disabled people.
“The Neptune Theatre is an iconic landmark on Liverpool’s cultural landscape,” said Peter Linford, director at Nobles Construction.
“We’re thrilled to be playing a leading role in its restoration as it enters the next phase in its history.”
