A NEWLY refurbished Sefton Park will be celebrating Halowe’en with the return of the lantern carnival parade.
The council have commissioned £20,000 for the £18,000 event after its cancellation last year.
The parade is one of the many festivals that Liverpool City Council has funded with money going to Africa Oye, Brouhaha, Hope Street Feast and Liverpool Samba Carnival.
The carnival, expecting 8,000 spectators, involves several hundred local people carrying their handmade lanterns in a procession that winds its way around one of the many lakes Sefton Park has to offer.
The parade is accompanied by carnival bands and costumed dancers.
“Liverpool’s Hallowe’en Lantern Carnival and its wonderful workshop programme has been a magnificent event for people of all ages to enjoy and get involved in,” said Cabinet Member for Culture and Tourism, Councillor Wendy Simon
“It’s been a great cultural success story and sorely missed at Sefton Park last year, so I’m delighted we’ve found the funding this year to make it happen.”
The event is produced and directed by Liverpool Lantern Company, who run lantern and costume making workshops for local community groups and families across the city.
Artistic director Jo Pocock is delighted that the event is back in Sefton Park, and looks forward to an “enchanting evening in one of the city’s most beautiful parks”.
Details of the start time, parade route and finale viewing area can be found on www.liverpoollanterncompany.co.uk.
